Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 1 Discussion Questions

The animation quality, style and quality of season 1 is phenomenal season 2 so far is a seamless transition a little different but very aligned with the era and the story. I don't know if it is a budgeting issue, animation issue or simply the machinations of a younger less powerful Gojo but one thing I did notice was the diminishment in the detail on Gojo's eyes compared to the season prior. Has anyone seen Vin Diesel's Riddick? A Minor talking point, only in this episode did I draw a parallel between Riddick and Gojo although I don't think Gojo is sensitive to light, I think he is sensitive to limitless curse energy.
Although as an anime only I don't know.
MAPPA choreography for the Kaisen has been phenomenal and I am sure they will produce the same level of quality but if I had an animation fear it would be choreography.
If I had to put my finger on it the animation style makes me feel like season 2 is younger than season 1, perhaps an intentional alteration, does anyone else feel that way?
The Group
Gojo is untouchable if he wants to be. He accepted the discipline on behalf of the group. They are tight and know that Gojo is such an asset his punishment is relatively small. Ieiri Shoko playing with Gojo'shades is a nice touch although the scene was small. It highlights just how comfortable around each other they are especially when she puts Gojo's shades back on. Remember Gojo can only be touched when he allows he knows when to be vulnerable. How dark do you think Gojo's shades are? Shoko could not see anything with them on. Most of us put on shades to keep the sun out Gojo puts on shades to keep the sun in.
Give Me A Better Geto Quote
Gojo walks like he owns the place his overzealous walk is exactly like his personality, he does not like rules.
This may seem unimportant and may it's just how I saw it. To me, it looks like Gojo pressed both buttons at once and only one activated. This would be typical Gojo rule-breaking trying to get to Cola's for the price of one. By avoiding Dogma's Gojo may have come up with unconventional effective ways of doing things.
One parallel I drew between Gojo and Geto is that Gojo does not say what is thought to be correct he says exactly what he thinks. Geto says what he's supposed to say merely parroting the narrative, perhaps his defect was never really a betrayal but rather him reverting to his true self finally authentic. You can't betray ideals that were never truly yours. Young Geto walks slouched as though he the weight of the world on his shoulders full of tension. It's a non-reactive stance the stance of someone who is suppressed from the inside or out.
In his opening monologue, Geto says how horrible eating curses is you have to be committed to eating them. I think his true desire is power and the monologue is illustrate what he is willing to do the get it. Let me know if you have a more appropriate quote to pinpoint young Geto's motives.
A man always has two reasons for doing anything: a good reason and the real reason. J. P. Morgan
Information Age And The Digital World
I don't know how much more Jujutsu Kaisen's 1st episode of season 1 could have done to make it clear that this is the Naughties era. The flip phones, VCR recording and that legendary Digimon reference.
I loved the Digmon reference for a few reasons first it's Digimon, secondly SkullGreymon was a direct consequence of Tai or Taichi's negative emotions which is fitting considering curses energy is negative energy. Thirdly Digimon came out as the digital age was in its very early development, dial-up and that.
Jujutsu's Kaisen's world is nothing like Harry Potter's they use laptops and phones and are up to date. It's very how things came to be with the speed of access to information increases the speed at which curses can develop. One thousand years ago an earthquake halfway across the world one never make the first page of Reddit worldwide. Someone seeing the effect of Curses would have spread rumours and even urban myths that contribute to curses but there is no way a cursed spirit like Hanami could have been born so quickly without the information era.
Intentional Irony
I think the first mission is intentionally designed to show us how things came to be and the second mission specifically for Geto and Gojo is specifically designed to challenge their philosophies. Gojo who wines about protecting the weak is forced to protect a weak defenceless girl for the sake of a pillar of the Jujutsu girl.
Geto claims he is using power for moral reasons to protect the weak but with a twist. The weak girl he is protecting will allow Tengen to maintain the current power structure, Geto is protecting the weak to help power structures more powerful than himself. I think this contradiction will lead him to put down the burden of his false moral narrative.
